Perth’s Whale Season 2025 Has Begun - How & Where to See Them
Understanding Western Australia’s Whale Watching Season
The annual whale migration is a remarkable natural phenomenon that takes place along the Western Australian coast, captivating the hearts of both locals and visitors from around the world. This captivating journey involves thousands of Humpback Whales undertaking extensive voyages from their breeding and calving areas in warmer northern waters, down to their feeding grounds in the Southern Ocean.
Humpback Whales are the true stars of the annual migration show along the Western Australian coast. These magnificent creatures are known for their impressive acrobatics, including breaching (leaping out of the water), tail slapping and fin waving. The journey of humpback whales covers thousands of kilometres, as they travel from the tropical regions of Western Australia to the chilly Antarctic waters – this corridor is often referred to as ‘The Humpback Highway’. This “highway” parallels the Western Australia coast, offering whale watchers plenty of incredible opportunity to witness these massive creatures.
The Best Whale Watching Months
August: The migration kicks off as humpback whales arrive along the coast.
September – October: Marking the peak of whale watching season, the waters are teeming with activity and the chance to witness these captivating displays is at its highest.
November: As spring arrives, the season begins to wind down, but whale sightings are still plentiful. November is a great month for travellers who prefer milder weather and a more relaxed atmosphere.
When planning your whale watching adventure this season, the timing of your visit can impact the experience. Whether you opt for the excitement of peak season or the tranquillity of late season, each month offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature's grand spectacle.
